Yanelys is a third year medical student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UM). She is Cuban and immigrated to the United States at a young age. She grew up in Miami, Fl and obtained her undergraduate education at Florida International University. Growing up in Miami she was able to witness the health disparities that existed in her community, especially in the Latino population. Now in medical school, she hopes to help combat these disparities and has been involved in multiple service and leadership positions with the Latino population such as serving on the clinical staff of one of the student-run clinics as well as being the head of the UM chapter of LMSA last year. She hopes to be able to create a long lasting mentorship program this year to empower our future doctors and help them become successful leaders of tomorrow.
