Thank You!

Dear LMSA Southeast,

As President of the Association of Latino Medical Students at Florida State University and your local Latino Medical Student Association Conference Co-Chair, I would like to thank you for your support and participation in the 2nd Annual Latino Medical Student Association Southeast Regional Conference.  This year’s topic was currently one of the biggest issues on Capitol Hill. Healthcare Reform has been on the agenda for the last 50 years and how we provide health care in the United States has only become more difficult andcontroversial. One reason for this is that health care costs money, time, energy and people to influcence and manage the system, all of which are commodities in teh Unitited States!

The Association of Latino Medical Students at the Florida State University College of Medicine was this year’s sponsor for the Southeast Regional Conference and our goal was to focus on how Healthcare Reform affects one of the largest minorities populations in the United States, the Latinos.  We did not set out to solve the problem as we know it is complicated and everyone involved has a significant emotional investment. Our goal was to get us, the new generation of physicians, involved in what will be our responsibility- change. We will be faced with changes in the demographics of our communities, challenges to who receives healthcare, how we spend our resources, and who we will care for a growing population.  This conference was a start for us. We came together, at the first new medical school of the new millennium, to share in our community, meet each other, and start the process for our medical career… health care reform.

We were fortunate enough to have some of the leaders in our medical community sharing their thoughts and expertise. The meeting was designed to be experimental, by us and for us. We had the opportunity to learn about how to write a resume and present ourselves to others, issues of Healthy People 2010 and 2020, smoking cessation, and to hear leaders debate on how to provide Healthcare Reform Change. We had workshops on cultural humility, service missions, suturing, and the use of simulation in teaching students.

As important, we had a chance to get together, meet each other, form a network, and start the work that will be our task for future medicine. We are the future of medicine! With the guidance of our mentors, the strength of our unity, and sheer determination, the LMSA and all our members will forge the change necessary for health care reform. I thank you for your support, enthusiasm and contribution. Together, Sembrando Raices, we are the drive for Latino Health Care reform.

Sinceramente,

Noemi LeFranc

President, FSU Association of Latino Medical Students

Local Regional Conference Co-Chair, Latino Medical Student Association
