USF Medical Interpreting Training Course: USF AHEC is offering a free medical interpreting training course for bilingual students, residents, faculty and staff on May 21, 2011 in Tampa, FL. USF Health Professions Summer Academy: The AHEC Professions Summer Academy is a two-week residential academic program intended to increase the college preparation skills of high school students interested in health careers such as: medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, allied health and public health. 2011 LMSA Southeast Regional Conference: The 2011 conference, Abriendo Puertas: Empowering Future Medical Leaders to Ensure the Ethical Care of Every Patient,  was a huge success! We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the LMSA-SE chapter at the University of Miami (Hispanic American Medical Student Assoc) and all speakers and participants. Events included lectures on pressing Latino health topics, clinical skills workshops, expert panel discussions, pre-medical seminars and resources, a residency fair, and a community service project. LMSA Southeast USF COM Chapter Medical Mission Trip: Our USF COM chapter will undertaking its first medical mission trip this year! They will be going to Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic on December 19-22, 2010.  Donations are currently being accepted. Please e-mail ahernan1@health.usf.edu for more information.

A Unified Name – A New Era: On March 22, 2009, the executive board of NNLAMS approved the National Name Change Proposal with the goal to move the network to the next phase of unification. The proposal involved changing the NNLAMS national and regional names to LMSA. On March 27, 2009 the LMSA legislative body approved the national name change proposal thus releasing the LMSA name for the five regions and national core to use. Additionally, the new national logo will be LMSA’s present logo. On July 1, 2009, the national name change will go into effect in the following regions: West, Midwest, Southwest, Southeast. The Northeast region of the network, NBLHO, will have a House of Delegates meeting soon to vote on this issue formally as a reigon. For more details email: lmsa.southeast@gmail.com
